The Prix de la justice Award

The Prix de la Justice medalCall for nominations

If there is one virtue upon which our forefathers founded Québec society, it is justice. It has figured and still figures on our list of priorities, it was and continues to be one of our core values, and as an essential element to a cohesive society, it is also the cornerstone of democracy.

We know that the administration of justice is not strictly a matter of technical and financial resources, despite their obvious necessity. In order to successfully carry out its mission or meet challenges that arise, all stakeholders must strive towards a common goal: to ensure a justice system whose sole purpose is to serve the rights and protect the interests of ordinary citizens.

In this 21st century, it is more important than ever for society as a whole to reinforce its adherence to the core values of justice: quality, accessibility and universality.

The Prix de la justice du Québec

There are men and women in Québec working to improve the quality of justice and make it more accessible. The Ministère de la Justice du Québec created a yearly award, the Prix de la Justice, to honour these individuals. The award recognizes the career or major achievement of a person who has made an exceptional contribution to promoting the values of justice within Québec society: accessibility, quality and universality.

Accessibility: Justice within reach of all Québec citizens.

Quality: Genuine, impartial and effective justice at the service of every citizen.

Universality: The same justice for all.

Eligibility

To be eligible, candidates must have made or be making an outstanding contribution to the application and promotion of the basic principles of justice: accessibility, quality and universality.

  • The Prix de la Justice du Québec is intended only for individuals and not for a group of persons.

  • The activities described in the nomination documents must have taken place in Québec.

  • The Prix de la Justice may not be awarded more than once to the same person.

Nomination

Any organization or person wishing to nominate one or more candidates must send the Secrétariat du Prix de la Justice a brief description of the career or major achievement of the nominee in support of his or her nomination for the award. The nominating document must be signed by the nominee and by three persons who can attest to the accuracy of the facts related. Five copies of the nominating document must be included with the application. You are strongly urged to include five copies of any document that supports the nomination (such as a newspaper article or photograph).

You can use the nomination form.

Selection jury

The selection jury is chaired by the Chief Justice of Québec and consists of one member from the academic world, one member from the media and two members representing the general public.

The selection jury examines the nominations, verifies the eligibility of the candidates and recommends one of them to the Minister. The working sessions of the jury are held in private.

The Prix de la justice medal

The person selected receives a solid silver medal symbolizing justice and its values, created by Québec artist Bozena Happach.

Public tribute

The Minister of Justice pays tribute to the prize winner in a public ceremony, which takes place in the presence of members of the press and representatives of the public and of the legal community.

Deadline for nominations

The deadline for nominating a candidate is August 1 each year.
