Birth Certificate

A birth certificate or a copy of one is used to prove one’s legal identity, family ties, age, sex or nationality. The certificate, or copy of the certificate, is also required when:

  • travelling abroad or applying for a passport;
  • claiming a retirement allowance from the government of Canada or a pension from Québec;
  • obtaining a social insurance card or driver’s licence;
  • registering a child in elementary or secondary school;
  • registering at CEGEP or university;
  • applying for scholarships.

The birth certificate mentions the child’s name and sex, the place, date and time of birth (time of birth is only mentioned for children born after 1994), registration number and date of issue.
