Established on January 1, 1994, the Directeur de l'état civil (Registrar of Civil Status) is a public officer whose duties derive from the Civil Code of Québec. Its administrative organization, within the Québec public service, is the purview of Services Québec  .
In Québec, the Directeur de l’état civil is the sole officer of civil status authorized to draw up acts of birth, marriage, civil union and death, and issue genuine documents related to these events.
