A summons is a legal document issued by a justice of the peace or a judge requiring the natural or legal person named in the document and charged with a criminal offence to appear in court on the date and at the place specified to answer to the charge described in the summons.
If an accused on whom a summons has been served fails to appear, a warrant for his or her arrest may be issued. If the accused appears in court and pleads not guilty, a trial will be held; if the accused pleads guilty, the court will impose the punishment prescribed by law.
