In the field of contract law, a plaintiff who sues to obtain payment of an amount owed under a contract is entitled to receive interest on that amount. The interest may be charged at the rate stipulated in the contract, or if no rate is stipulated, at the legal rate of interest (which is currently of 5% per year) set by the federal government. The judge may also add an indemnity.
It is important to note that Revenu Québec sets its own interest rate (in French) for the recovery of unpaid income tax.
