Recovery of tobacco-related health care costs
The Québec government sues tobacco product manufacturers for
over $60 billion
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Québec, Jean-Marc Fournier, and the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Yves Bolduc, have announced that the Québec government will take legal action against tobacco product manufacturers to recover tobacco-related health care costs.
The amount claimed is over $60 billion, representing the Québec government’s related expenditure since the establishment of the Québec health insurance plan and future expenditure up to 2030.
The prosecution is based on the Tobacco-Related Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act , passed by a unanimous vote of the National Assembly in June 2009.
