Crime victims assistance centres (CAVACs) are community organizations that offer front-line services to victims of crime, their immediate family and witnesses to crimes.
To fulfil their mission, CAVACs work closely with representatives from the justice community, the health and social services network and community organizations.
Created following the enactment of the Crime Victims Compensation Act in 1972, the centres are financed through the crime victims assistance fund, or the FAVAC (Fonds d'aide aux victimes d'actes criminels), a fund administered by the crime victims assistance office, or the BAVAC (Bureau d'aide aux victimes d'actes criminels), which is under the authority of the Ministère de la Justice.
There are currently 16 crime victims assistance centres in Québec.
