A collateral is any individual who is an indirect relative, namely neither an ascendant nor a descendant.

The rules that govern successions recognize two types of collaterals: privileged collaterals (brother, sister, step-brother, step-sister, etc.) and ordinary collaterals (aunt, great-uncle, cousin, etc.).
