Witnesses to the civil union
You must consent to form your civil union before two witnesses, whose role is to:
- witness that consent was given, in order to be able to testify about it later, if necessary;
- sign your declaration of civil union.
Eligibility of witnesses
Witnesses must understand the role they are to play.
You can choose any person to act as a witness. If your child is old enough to understand the role, he or she may be chosen even under the age of 18.
Unlike the person who witnesses your civil union notice, a civil union witness does not need to know both intended spouses well. You have no obligation to choose the same person for both roles.
