Commissioner for oaths
In some legal processes you will be required to make an oath before a commissioner for oaths to make a document official, or to increase the credibility of your testimony.
Role of a commissioner for oaths
Commissioners for oaths are appointed by the Minister of Justice. Their role is to administer oaths. Depending on the commission they receive, they may receive oaths:
- only in Québec;
- inside and outside Québec, for example in another Canadian province.
Commissioners for oaths are not required to verify the accuracy of a statement sworn under oath.
