Group information sessions on parenting after separation were suspended due to the pandemic but are once again available and are now offered remotely.
These information sessions are provided free of charge and help parents deal with their break-up and settle the details of their separation, whether as part of the family mediation process or during a court hearing.
Each session is conducted remotely by two experienced mediators and is available in French or English. Sessions will cover the following:
- The consequences of the break-up on members of the family: psychological shock caused by separation, needs and reactions of children, communications with the other parent, etc. (90 minutes);
- The family mediation process and legal information (30 minutes);
- Question period.
Legal obligation to attend the session
Note that since 2016, attendance at a parenting after separation information session has been a legal requirement if you and your ex-spouse have children together and still disagree on any question concerning your separation at the time you are scheduled to be heard by a judge. After the session, you will receive an attestation that you have attended an information session, which will allow your case to be heard by the court if it is contested.
