Québec City, December 10, 2019 – Québec’s Ministère de la Justice warns the public about a series of hoax messages distributed, in the form of phone calls or letters, by people claiming to be employees of the Ministère, a courthouse or a court of justice.
The fraudsters ask citizens to make payments of money, or provide personal information such as their social insurance number.
The calls and letters do not come from the Ministère de la Justice or the court system, and constitute attempted fraud. The Ministère asks citizens who receive a hoax message not to provide any personal information or make a payment.
The Ministère can confirm that none of the personal information it holds concerning individual citizens has been compromised. Polices forces have been informed of the situation.
Citizens who receive a hoax message can call:
• their local police department;
• the Sûreté du Québec (310-4141);
• the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501).
They can also call the Ministère de la Justice with any other questions (1-866-536-5140, option 4).
