Judicial districts are the result of a geographical division of Québec to ensure the efficient administration of justice. For instance, this division allows the majority of citizens to access judicial services without having to travel great distances.
In 1760, the colony was divided into three districts: Québec, Montréal and Trois-Rivières. They became judicial districts in 1793. Today, there are 36 judicial districts across Québec. For each of the judicial districts, the Territorial Division Act designates a county seat where a courthouse is located. However, some judicial districts have more than one courthouse on their territory.
To facilitate the administration of justice, certain municipalities come under the jurisdiction of more than one judicial district.
